Americans relocate for various reasons: whether it's the need for better housing, new job opportunities, or simply a change of pace. In 2023, middle-class Americans, in particular, have been on the move in significant numbers. According to a study by HireAHelper.com, which analyzed U.S. Census Bureau data, just under 9% of American households in the middle 60% of earners — those making between $30,000 and $150,000 a year — moved last year.

​The primary reason for this migration? A desire for new or better housing. Nearly 14% of these movers cited this motivation, while around 10% sought more affordable living conditions. The study also showed that 57% of middle-income households who moved stayed within the same county, while about 25% relocated to a different county in the same state. Interestingly, 18% made the bigger leap, crossing state lines to settle in a new home.

Florida stood out as a top destination for middle-class Americans. Five out of the ten metro areas with the largest gains in middle-income residents were located in the Sunshine State. The appeal?

Affordable living, warm climate, tax benefits, proximity to beaches, a family-friendly atmosphere, and a strong job market are some of the advantages. Cities like Port St. Lucie are at the forefront of this trend, with the middle-class population increasing by an impressive 88%.
