The artist of this beautiful canvas is James Coleman, and I have received personal permission from him to use this photo on my blog.
A couple of weeks ago, I had a wonderful trip to St. Augustine, Florida, renowned as the oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement in the continental United States. While my primary purpose was business-related, involving meetings with my Florida partner who specializes in building turnkey investment properties, the trip turned out to be much more than I had expected. It became a fascinating and heart-warming adventure.
Exploring this historic city revealed a captivating fusion of rich heritage, architectural monuments, and charming scenery, adding depth to what initially seemed like a routine work trip. This charming city became the backdrop for a deeply personal and emotional experience.
St. Augustine is a hidden treasure of Florida, brimming with history and charm. The city's cobblestone streets and historic buildings tell tales of centuries past. But that's a story for another article.
What truly touched my soul was an unexpected visit to an art gallery during an evening stroll through downtown.
Brushstrokes of Inspiration: An Evening with Art in Florida
One evening, as I wandered through the historic downtown, I found myself drawn to an art gallery. My love for painting has always pulled me toward such places.
In my early years, painting was not just a hobby but an obsession. Back in my art school days, painting wasn't just something I did for fun; it was an all-consuming passion! I'd spend hours lost in my artwork, dreaming of reaching the heights of the greats—like Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Raphael, Aivazovsky, Repin, and Ivan Shishkin.
My heart belonged to realism and hyperrealism, styles that were not widely appreciated, especially in the 1980s. Each stroke of my brush was an attempt to bring real life, in all its intricate detail, to my canvas, though it often went unappreciated by my teachers.
My journey in art school was cut short, partially due to the discovery that I was severely color-blind, a revelation that only added to my artistic struggles.
Nonetheless, my love for art never faded, and every visit to a gallery rekindles that childhood passion.
On this particular evening, as I stepped into the gallery, I was instantly captivated. The paintings before me were not in my beloved style of realism, yet they held a magic of their own. The colors and unique style took my breath away, leaving me rooted in awe.
The colors were astonishing, alive with an energy that seemed to leap off the canvas. The style was a breath of fresh air, unlike anything I'd seen from contemporary artists.
I couldn't tear my eyes away from the vibrant scenes. They had a tropical flair, a celebration of life and nature that felt both modern and timeless. The joy and positivity radiating from each piece were palpable, drawing me in and holding me captive in a world of wonder.
As I stood there, gazing at the paintings, I felt a profound sense of connection. It was as if the artwork was telling a story, inviting me to be a part of it. The colors, the strokes, the very essence of each piece spoke to me in a language I hadn't heard in years. It was a moment of pure magic, a reminder of the beauty and power of art.
With the permission of a charming salesperson, I took a couple of photos. As I walked back to my hotel that evening, the images of those vibrant paintings stayed with me. They reminded me that art, much like life, is full of unexpected surprises and moments of beauty.
St. Augustine, with its rich history and vibrant culture, offered me an unforgettable journey, leaving me with memories I will cherish forever. I look forward to sharing more about this hidden treasure in another article, dedicated to exploring the wonders of St. Augustine. For now, I carry with me the memories of an evening filled with art, inspiration, and a renewed sense of passion.
But the story doesn't end there!
The Maestro of Color: Discovering James Coleman's Legacy
Of course, I made sure to note the name of the artist. Upon returning home to Toronto, I did a Google search and was astounded by what I discovered. It was no wonder I had been so enthralled by his work! His name is James Coleman—a maestro of color, light, and design, now one of the most collected and sought-after artists around the world.
His pieces can be found in many fine, personal, and corporate art collections, making him one of the most collected artists in contemporary art. His work is represented by some of the most prominent and respected galleries in North America.
What astonished me further was that James Coleman helped bring some of Walt Disney’s most beloved films to life as a background painter before pursuing a career as a fine artist. For almost 17 years, Coleman supervised the hand-painted backgrounds for more than 12 feature films and over 30 short films. The memorable titles include Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too, The Fox and the Hound, The Little Mermaid, and the Academy Award-winning Beauty and the Beast.
So, if you ever find yourself with the opportunity, do visit his galleries to experience the beauty of his talent first-hand.
And if you happen to acquire a vacation home in Florida, a tropical masterpiece by James Coleman is an absolute must—a captivating addition to your own tropical paradise!
